From application to PMP® exam day
[PMP-F##] tag that resolves to a fact in our store. Each fact holds a pinpoint citation into the official source. We link the source and never reproduce it. This is study guidance, not a ruling on your own application — PMI decides eligibility, fees, and scheduling. The closing pointer to lesson 04 rests on a verified-secondary fact; that lesson explains why.The order of events
You finish your 35 contact hours. You submit the application. PMI reviews it. You pay the exam fee. You schedule the exam [PMP-F24][PMP-F09].
The coursework has to be finished by the time you submit, not merely under way [PMP-F24]. A class you are still sitting in does not count yet.
The initial examination fee is paid after your application is approved and before you can schedule [PMP-F09]. Do not plan a test date until approval arrives.
Dana schedules
Dana's projects ended in February 2026 at 48 unique months [PMP-F06]. Dana starts leading again in September 2026 and completes 60 months at the end of August 2027 [PMP-F06].
Dana submits in September 2027, then waits before booking a test date. Our store pins no audit timeline [PMP-F08], so Dana treats any buffer as a guess.
Dana confirms the eligibility window's own dates in the PMI account, then books eight weeks out. That leaves room for a second attempt inside the three the period allows [PMP-F12].
How long the review takes
PMI states 5 calendar days for an application submitted online [PMP-F08]. Selection for the audit process takes you off that timeline entirely [PMP-F08].
Plan for the audit case even if it does not happen. The passage we pin gives the exception and a pointer to PMI's audit-process section [PMP-F08]. Our store pins no audit timeline, so leave slack before any deadline you care about.
Membership is optional
You do not need to be a PMI member to earn the credential [PMP-F09]. What you pay depends on whether you are a member and on where you are [PMP-F09].
Compare the two totals before you pay. Check the current fee table on PMI's own site, because prices change and our store pins only what the handbook states.
Booking is not free to undo. Once you have confirmed a date, a later cancellation or a no-show can cost you money [PMP-F21]. Book a date you can keep.
Your one-year window
The exam may be attempted three times inside your one-year eligibility period [PMP-F12]. Our store does not pin what starts that clock, so confirm your own dates in your PMI account.
If the period expires without a passing result, a fresh application for the certification is required [PMP-F13]. Plan as if the year runs continuously.
Letting the year lapse costs more than retaking inside it. A retake while the period still runs is offered at a substantially reduced price [PMP-F22]. A fresh application after it lapses is not.
After three attempts
Use all three attempts without passing and a waiting period starts. The wait runs twelve months from your most recent exam date, and it blocks reapplying for the certification [PMP-F12]. Other PMI certifications stay open to you during that year [PMP-F12].
Treat attempt one as a real attempt. The limit is three inside the eligibility year [PMP-F12].
If you doubt the score
A manual hand rescore may be requested for a fee of $45 USD [PMP-F14]. It applies when the original test was administered on paper rather than on a computer [PMP-F14].
The source states the fee and one condition: a paper-based original administration [PMP-F14]. Our store pins no rescore route for a computer-delivered test, so ask PMI if you need one.
What to do next
Copy the application-day checklist from the workbook and put real dates on it.
Then read lesson 04, which describes the exam and a reported July 2026 change to the content outline [PMP-F15][PMP-F19].
Check yourself
Answer before you open each one. Retrieving an answer from memory is what makes it stick.
When do you pay the initial examination fee?
After the application is approved and before you can schedule the exam [PMP-F09].
Name the one condition that voids the stated processing time.
Selection for the audit process — the stated online timeline then does not apply [PMP-F08].
You fail the exam twice in your eligibility year. What is left?
One more attempt inside that same one-year period, because the limit is three [PMP-F12].
Your eligibility year ends and you have not passed. What happens?
A fresh application for the certification is required [PMP-F13].
Evidence for this lesson
Every tag above resolves here. Each entry names the section and page to check in your own copy, with the short quote we relied on — we link the source and never reproduce it.
Experience is counted in months of tenure, not number of projects; months in which multiple projects overlap count only once toward the eligibility requirement.
“Tenure is tracked in months, not number projects”
PMI's stated processing time for online applications is 5 calendar days, unless the application is selected for audit.
“processing time for applications submitted online is 5 calendar days”
PMI membership is not required for the PMP; fees vary by membership status and region, and the initial exam fee is paid after application approval, before scheduling.
“Membership is NOT required to obtain the PMP.”
A candidate gets up to three attempts inside the one-year eligibility period. Reapplying for the certification is then barred until twelve months after the most recent exam date, though other PMI certifications stay open in the interim.
“up to three times within your one-year eligibility period”
If the eligibility year runs out before the candidate passes, a fresh application for the certification is required.
“eligibility period expires without you passing the examination, you must reapply”
If the original test was administered on paper rather than computer, a manual hand rescore may be requested for a fee of $45 USD.
“The fee for a hand rescore is $45 USD.”
PMI has published an updated PMP Examination Content Outline that takes effect for all PMP exams from July 2026, replacing the January 2021 version.
“will come into effect for all PMP® exam tests from July 2026”
As of 2026-08-08 (UTC), PMI's canonical PMP handbook URL served the document self-identified as the Examination Content Outline – January 2021 (whole-file SHA-256 3a840ea9bc8afa0c360362fa03b6879003cfe680ba9f018b6d4760fc9f98b63e), i.e. the pre-July-2026 version remained the one PMI distributed at that address.
“Examination Content Outline – January 2021”
Once a candidate's exam date is confirmed and scheduled, the source states they may owe charges for cancelling or for failing to appear.
“you may be subject to cancellation or no-show fees”
The source states that a retake is offered at a substantially reduced price while the candidate's eligibility period has not yet lapsed, with membership and region still affecting the amount.
“you may do so for a substantial discount subject to membership and regional pricing”
The coursework behind the contact hours must be finished before the application is submitted, not merely under way.
“The course work must be completed by the time you submit the application.”
